This is another extraordinary recording from Arvo Pärt in what is now becoming a large and extraordinary discographic journey for both the Estonian composer and producer Manfred Eicher.
After all, it was Eicher who set the wheels in motion with the release of “Tabula rasa” in 1984 on the newly formed ECM New Series imprint and has steadfastly supported and documented Pärt’s music with a steady stream of releases.
With “Tractus” the composer explores new versions of his works with a particular inspiration being the liturgical, scriptural and texts from Christianity. The opening “Littlemore Tractus” for example drawing from a sermon from John Henry Newman is beautifully reimagined in this new arrangement of a composition that was originally scored for organ and voices.
Here, as indeed throughout the album the blending of the Tallin Chamber Orchestra and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir comes together in a glorious and harmonious sound
The music is wonderfully presented and the way in which Pärt explores the dynamic and timbral possibilities between the orchestra and choir repays careful and attentive listening.
